Here’s exactly how a custom pull-out shelf project works at Shelf Theory — from the first phone call to the day your last shelf slides out smooth — and what you can expect at each step.
Step 1: The Free In-Home Consultation (30–45 Minutes)
Every project starts the same way: we come to your house, open the cabinets together, and talk about how you actually use them. Where do you bend? What do you dig for? Which cabinet is the one everyone complains about? We measure everything ourselves — exact interior width, depth, and door clearance for each cabinet you want upgraded — and we note what’s behind the cabinet (pipes, outlet boxes, hinge swing) so nothing is a surprise later. You leave the consultation with a realistic sense of scope; we leave with everything we need to build the right shelves.
Step 2: Your Written Quote (1–2 Business Days)
Within a day or two of the consultation you get a written, line-by-line quote: which cabinets are getting which pull-out system, what hardware each one uses, and the total. This is the number you pay — there are no “adjustments” that appear halfway through the project. If something changes your mind after the measurements (yes, that happens), we update the quote before any wood is cut. That’s it. No deposit games, no hourly billing, no scope creep.
Step 3: The Build (Typically 1–2 Weeks in Our Shop)
Once you approve the quote, your shelves go into our shop. Each one is built from scratch to the exact dimensions we measured on your cabinets — hardwood construction, finished to handle spills, grease, and Arizona humidity, and mounted on 100 lb capacity, full-extension, ball-bearing slides. Most standard pull-outs take about a week and a half to build and finish; more complex systems (tiered pantry units, large under-sink or double-stacked systems) can take closer to two weeks. We’ll keep you posted if anything shifts — that’s the communication commitment, and it’s part of the job, not an extra.
Step 4: Installation (Usually a Single Visit)
Installation day is fast because all the measuring was done up front. Our installers typically finish a full kitchen’s pull-outs in one visit: we remove the cabinet contents (or work around them), mount the slides, set each shelf, and test every drawer under load before we leave. You should be able to open and close every pull-out yourself the same day — and you will, because we walk you through each one before we head out. There’s no demolition, no changes to your cabinet boxes or doors, and no mess left behind. For most homes the total install time is a few hours, not days.
So How Long From Phone Call to Finished Kitchen?
For a typical project — say, ten to fifteen pull-outs across a kitchen and pantry — most customers are looking at about three to four weeks from the first call to the finished install. The consultation happens within the week, the quote comes in a day or two, the build runs one to two weeks, and the install is a single visit. The two things that most often stretch that timeline: the complexity of the systems you choose (tiered and double-stacked units take longer to build than a single pull-out), and matching finishes to your cabinetry when a custom color is involved. Both of those get flagged in your quote, so you know before you commit.
