How to Audit Your Kitchen Cabinets in 15 Minutes (And What to Do With What You Find)

Most homeowners never actually inventory their cabinets. The shelves just exist — half full, half blocked, some of them holding a single mystery pot from 2019. But a quick walk-through of your kitchen can reveal exactly which cabinets are costing you time every single day, and which ones are candidates for the one upgrade that turns dead space into working storage.

Step 1: The Floor-Cabinet Kneel Test (3 minutes)

Start with the base cabinets — the ones where you kneel. Open each one and ask two questions:

• Can I see the back half of the shelf without reaching? If you cannot see it, you are not using it. Everything that lives in the back of a fixed floor shelf is effectively storage you paid for and do not get to use.
• How heavy is the stuff in there? Cast iron, small appliances, bulk pantry goods, and trash cans all need a shelf that can actually carry it. A fixed shelf holds weight fine; it just makes you do all the work.

Every floor cabinet that fails the first question is a prime candidate for a custom pull-out shelf. When the whole shelf slides out on full-extension slides, the “back of the cabinet” problem disappears — everything comes out to standing or sitting height.

Step 2: The Upper-Cabinet Step-Stool Check (3 minutes)

Now the uppers. For each one, ask:

• Do I use a stool, the top of the fridge, or a chair to reach this cabinet? Every time you do, you are spending a small effort that adds up hundreds of times a year — and every reach up is a dropped-plate moment waiting to happen.
• Is the top shelf full of stuff I almost never use? That is not a storage problem, that is an access problem. A pull-out shelf on the top shelf means it comes down to you instead of you going up to it.

If your kitchen has floor-to-ceiling uppers — common in newer Phoenix builds — the very top shelves are usually the most neglected space in the whole house. That is also where a pull-out pays off fastest.

Step 3: The Blind Corner and Under-Sink Sweep (4 minutes)

Two cabinet types cause more frustration than any others:

• Blind corner cabinets — the L-shaped dead zone where two cabinet runs meet. Items pushed to the back of a fixed corner shelf require elbow-twisting to reach. Custom corner solutions (lazy Susans, turntables, or dual pull-out units) make that space usable without changing a single cabinet box.

Take a photo of both. If the photo shows a jumble of spray bottles and mystery boxes, you now have a before-picture for whatever you decide to do.

Step 4: Score the Cabinets (5 minutes)

Walk back through your list and tag each problem cabinet with one of three labels:

• Daily friction. You open this cabinet more than a few times a day and it fights you — the pantry, the dish cabinet, the trash pull-out. These get first priority; the payoff is measured in daily convenience.
• Weekly friction. The baking cabinet, the cleaning supply cabinet, the stemware. Second priority.
• Dead space. The blind corners, the top shelf, the cabinet you only use for holiday glassware. Low effort to fix, and you never have to think about it again.

A good rule of thumb: fix the top three daily-friction cabinets first. For most Phoenix kitchens, that is the pantry, one deep floor cabinet, and the dish or pot cabinet.
